The University of Kentucky placed third at the 28th Annual Carlson Senior Mine Design Competition. The national competition invites students from accredited mining engineering universities to submit their capstone projects to compete with other universities on the best overall mine design.

Department of Mining Engineering seniors Ruby Jost, Andrew Lupachino, Collin Mrugala, Muataz Almamari and Kevin Sanders comprised the team receiving top three honors.

The competition provides mining engineering students the chance to receive recognition for the effort poured into their senior design projects. These projects require students to consider all aspects of mine planning, pulling from the full curriculum taught during their academic careers. Submissions are judged on topics including geologic modeling, mine design, reclamation planning, economic analysis and more. First place is awarded $2,000 with second place winning $1,000 and third place receiving $500.

The competition started in 1988 under Steve Richards, PE, retired Carlson director of mining sales. Carlson began the competition to show its support for the mining academic community. The company additionally supports those competition with software and free training on Carlson Mining.
