As electronic waste (e-waste) piles up globally, researchers at the University of Kentucky Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment and the Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering are spearheading innovative methods to recover valuable metals from discarded devices and industrial waste.

The Department of Mining Engineering received a donation of over $200,000 from the Friends of Coal - Kentucky organization to support Kentucky students pursuing degrees in mining-related fields.
Established in 2024, the Lighthouse Beacon Foundation Endowment supports faculty, research, graduate students, facilities and research infrastructure in the Pigman College of Engineering. In its inaugural year, the endowment has made $160,000 in funds available for distribution, with a priority on faculty and research scholar support.
